The Land Between the Two Rivers
The land between the two rivers was the place of the 1st civilization. It was also the beginning of agriculture in the ancient world. Agriculture and irrigation in Mesopotamia began in 8000 B.C.E. when a stable food supply needed to be established. The land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers supplied a great deal of silt. This provided fertile land for Mesopotamians. The location of Mesopotamia allowed the people to grow crops and have yearly floods that supplied silt for the soil. Irrigation systems were made up of dams, canals, dikes, levees, and basins. This allowed many crops to be grown correctly and quickly. The challenges the Mesopotamians faced let them see the importance of a well, and organized irrigation system. The Irrigation and agriculture of Mesopotamia was important because it supplied the food for all of Mesopotamia, and it developed an important characteristic of a civilization.
